The Provost Explains Why Mltio University Will Not Charge Online Tuition

Mltio University's Provost has set out, in a short address to applicants, why the university does not and will not charge tuition for online study.

The argument is partly financial. Once a module exists — designed, recorded, staffed with a teaching team — the cost of teaching one more online student is small. The marginal cost is marking, supervision time and support. "Charging a working nurse in Lagos eight thousand dollars for a place that costs us a fraction of that to deliver is not a business model we are proud of," the Provost said. "It is a toll on a bridge that is already built."

The argument is mostly institutional. Mltio was founded in 1913 to teach people who could not otherwise reach a university. "If our founders could see a technology that let us teach anyone, anywhere, to the same standard, and they saw us putting a five-figure price on it, they would ask what had gone wrong with us," the Provost said.

The address is careful about what free does not mean. It does not mean the program is easy, that assessment is relaxed, or that the university is not accountable for quality. It does not mean there are no examination charges, though sponsorship exists for those. And it does not mean the optional Minneapolis campus is free — that is a separate, priced choice.

"We protect standards fiercely precisely because the degree is free," the Provost said. "A free degree that is not respected is worthless. A free degree that is assessed and externally examined to the U.S. standard changes lives."

Carlos Mendes, a fintech product lead in São Paulo, said the reasoning mattered to him. "I did not want charity," he said. "I wanted a university that had thought about why it charges what it charges. Mltio had."

Staff across admissions, registry, teaching and student services are told to design every process as if the default student is studying after a full day's work: recorded sessions, published rubrics, named advisers, and a library desk that does not close at the end of one country's office hours. Mltio will not pretend a program is light. Applicants should plan their weekly hours before accepting an offer and ask direct questions at the open webinars if a page reads as vague.
