FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know about blockchain IP certificates, free proofs, and verification.
What is Maximum proof?+
Maximum proof is mltio's flagship free certificate that combines OpenTimestamps (Bitcoin calendar), EU qualified TSA (RFC 3161), and Sigstore Rekor (transparency log) in one attestation — triple independent proof in ~30 seconds.
Is Maximum proof really free?+
Yes. Maximum proof, OpenTimestamps, and Sigstore Rekor are unlimited on all plans including free. They do not count toward your Bitcoin on-chain certificate quota.
Does mltio store my files?+
In hash-only mode, only the SHA-256 fingerprint is sent to our server. Your file never leaves your device. Vault mode encrypts files client-side before upload.
What is OP_RETURN?+
A Bitcoin output type allowing up to 80 bytes of data on-chain. We store your 32-byte SHA-256 hash permanently for timestamping.
How long does confirmation take?+
Bitcoin blocks are mined every ~10 minutes. Most transactions confirm within 10–30 minutes. We update status automatically via cron.
Can anyone verify my certificate?+
Yes. Use sha256sum on the original file, find the TXID on blockstream.info, and confirm OP_RETURN matches. No account needed.
Is this legally recognized?+
Blockchain timestamps are increasingly accepted as evidence of existence. Combined with EU TSA timestamps, they support IP disputes and trade secret cases.
What free proof options are available?+
OpenTimestamps, Sigstore Rekor, and Maximum proof (all three combined) are free and instant. Bitcoin OP_RETURN on-chain certificates require a paid plan.
What is Sigstore Rekor?+
Rekor is a transparency log maintained by the Sigstore project. Each certificate gets a UUID and log index that anyone can verify independently at rekor.sigstore.dev.
What is OpenTimestamps?+
OpenTimestamps anchors your file hash to the Bitcoin blockchain via public calendar servers — decentralized, free, and permanent proof of existence.
What does certification cost?+
Free proofs (OTS, Rekor, Max stack) are unlimited. Bitcoin on-chain certificates require Starter or higher. See pricing for subscription options.
What is version history?+
Chain certificates for the same project — an immutable timeline from first draft to latest version.
How does encrypted vault work?+
AES-256-GCM encryption in your browser. Your passphrase never leaves your device. We store only ciphertext.
What if mltio shuts down?+
Certificates remain on Bitcoin forever. Verification needs only the original file and a block explorer.
